Work Example 2

WorkKey Level: 4
NATEF Automotive Tasks: II.D.2.2

The technician is checking torque converter stator endplay.  When it is all the way down, the dial indicator reads 0.675" and when it is up, it reads 0.725".  The manufacturer’s endplay tolerance is 0.050" + 0.010".  Is this torque converter usable?  Justify your answer.

Solution:

The tolerance is 0.050" + 0.010"
0.050" – 0.010" = 0.040"
0.050" + 0.010" = 0.060"
0.040" < n < 0.060"

0.725" – 0.675" = 0.050"

Since 0.050" is between 0.040" and 0.060", yes the torque converter is usable.
