Problem:

What is the engine displacement in cubic inches on an 8-cylinder engine 4.6 liter engine with a cylinder bore diameter of 3 1/2 inch a piston stroke length of 4 3/8 inch?

Solution

Calculate the volume of one cylinder.
V = pr2l
V =(p)(3.5/2)2(4.375)
V =(p)(1.752)(4.375)
V =(p)(3.0625)(4.375)
V = 42.09243282
The volume displacement for one cylinder is approximately 42.09 in3.

Calculate the total volume of all eight cylinders.
(42.09)(8) = 336.72
The total engine displacement is 336.72 in3.
